At Last, Alexa Delivers Stereo Sound!

Amazon has written some directions of its own and where possible, I like to provide information that comes straight from Amazon. Here it is:

For stereo sound, pair two supported Echo devices of the same model to create a speaker set. One Echo device plays sound on the right channel (right side), while the other plays sound on the left channel (left side). For richer bass, you can pair Echo Sub to supported Echo devices.

Note: Paired Echo speakers only support music content. Line-out and Bluetooth connections to external speakers aren’t recommended.

To get started, download the latest version of the Alexa app and check that your Echo devices also have the latest software update. For more information, go to Alexa Device Software Updates (UK readers click here) (Canadian readers click here).

To create a speaker set:

Place your devices in the same room, several ft (1 m) apart from each other.

Note: If you’re using Echo Sub, place it on the floor in the same room as the other speakers. In the Alexa app, select the Devices icon (looks like a little house with switches on it), and then the Add icon (circle with a plus sign). Select Add Stereo Pair / Subwoofer. Select Speaker Sets, and then follow the on-screen instructions.

Click here for Amazon’s U.S. site Set Up Echo Speakers For Stereo Sound page, which includes a how-to video. (UK readers click here), (Canadian readers click here) for the same page on those sites.

Which Devices Are Supported?

As of this writing (on 11/9/18), Alexa devices that can be set up for stereo sound are limited to:

2nd Generation Echo (UK readers click here (Canadian readers click here)

1st Generation Echo Plus (new units no longer available for sale)

2nd Generation Echo Plus (UK readers click here) (Canadian readers click here)

3rd Generation Echo Dot (UK readers click here) (Canadian readers click here)
