5/5/17 Alexa Fast Tips Friday

Welcome to LME’s 5/5/17 Alexa Fast Tips Friday. You may have heard some of these before, but hopefully, at least one will be totally new and helpful to you.

Friday Is That You

1. Call “Mayday” to get Alexa to throw you a tech support lifeline.

Say the wake word followed by the word “mayday” and Alexa will explain how to get Amazon tech support to call you and offer their help with any Alexa-related problem you’re having.

Cool!

If the issue is that you can’t get Alexa to respond to you at all, go to the Help & Feedback page in the Alexa app—if you don’t have the mobile version installed, you can access it online at https://alexa.amazon.com (UK readers, https://alexa.amazon.co.uk)—and select the Call Us option. From there, fill out the form, enter your phone number and Amazon will call you.

2. Alexa is now being rolled out to iPhone users in the US.
Make sure you have the latest version of the Amazon shopping app—not the Alexa app, the regular Amazon app—on your iPhone. Once you do, tapping the microphone icon in the Amazon app launches the Alexa voice service.

In the U.S., Alexa is also available on the Huawei Mate 9 Android phone. Tech pundits seem to agree it will be coming to other Android phones both in the U.S. and U.K. in the near future as well.

3. When outside services don’t work, there’s a way to tell if the problem is with Alexa, your Alexa device, or the service.
First, try accessing the service from a different Alexa device, or if you don’t own a different Alexa device, via the Alexa mobile app or web app. If the outside service works on the other device or in the Alexa app, then it’s a problem with the Alexa device that you’re having trouble with. Go back to tip #1 above to get some help from Amazon tech support.

If the outside service doesn’t work on the other Alexa device or in the Alexa app, try accessing it from a different, non-Alexa device, such as your computer, tablet or cell phone. Most of the outside services available via Alexa are also available through their own dedicated mobile apps or websites.

If the outside service works when you access it without Alexa, then the problem is with the Alexa Voice Service. If that’s the case, go back to tip #1 above to get in touch with Amazon.
